Q: What CPU is best for Autodesk AutoCAD?
Most AutoCAD tasks are only single threaded, so it is only able to utilize a single core of the CPU, and because of this our general recommendation is to get the highest frequency (speed)
At the time of writing this, Intel’s Core i9 or i7 K-series offer high clock speeds alongside a good number of cores for multitasking (and more)
The only exceptions to the single thread limitation in AutoCAD are 2D Regeneration and Mental Ray rendering. 2D regeneration is not an intensive task and isn’t a consideration when choosing a CPU, but if you’re rending using Mental Ray it’s worth choosing a higher core count CPU.
Q: Does having more CPU cores improve AutoCAD performance?
Drafting in AutoCAD doesn’t require more than a handful of cores, and it’s been found that a CPU with the highest operating frequency will give the best overall performance for general modelling tasks.
Intel’s Core i7 models offer very high single-core clock speed and is perfect for AutoCAD performance. There’s no need for Xeon CPU’s since they aren’t available with as high of clock speeds as Intel’s Core i7 models.
